Detroit Style Hot Dogs
Detroit Style Hot Dogs, known throughout Metro Detroit as a Coney Dog, is Tyler’s favorite way to eat a hot dog. Growing up in Southeast Michigan, he could find Coney dogs anywhere he went. Ted’s Coney Island in Port Huron was right next to Tyler’s high school and served them up daily. In downtown Detroit, American Coney Island and Lafayette Coney Island compete for business right next-door to each other. American is filled with photos of celebrities, sports stars, and well-known folks who have stopped in for a bite over the years. By now you may be thinking, “What’s so great about this ‘Coney Dog’ anyhow”? We’ll let you in on the secret: It’s the chili. This delicacy is a hot dog topped with chili, mustard, and onions. Only three toppings – so simple, yet so scrumptious. It is arguably the best way to eat a hot dog. Now, we realize that some people like the Chicago style dog, with relish, a pickle spear, and half the vegetable aisle on top. There’s too much going on there for Tyler – ain’t nobody got time for that. Other people prefer to keep it simple and just use ketchup and mustard. That’s fine, too. But why settle for fine when the recipe for the best hot dog is right here in front of you!?
It’s true that you can’t keep all those delicious toppings from sliding off without a bun, and buns are made of gluten-filled bread. (Full disclosure: The Detroit Style Hot Dogs in the pictures are regular old buns that Tyler enjoyed very much). However, these gluten-free buns from Udi’s are a great substitute that let Lauren (and the rest of all you GF/DF eaters out there) dig in worry-free! These buns are so delicious, Lauren actually uses them as sandwich bread. If you freeze them, put them in the microwave for a minute or so to make them extra soft and delicious.
